CUSTOMISING THE BROWSER (Page 1)

On completion of this tutorial, you will be able to:

  • Load pages more quickly
  • Control use of temporary files on your PC
  • Customise the toolbar
  • Change the appearance of web page text

Make Pages Load Quicker

Moving from site to site can be slow if the internet is busy, if the site you are trying to access is busy or if you are using a slow modem. Although site providers are always looking to make accessing their pages quicker, the volume of traffic on the internet is growing more quickly.

If a site contains graphics (or other multimedia content) you can prevent the graphics from downloading and so speed up browsing.

Note: A well-designed site will not rely on graphic hyperlinks for you to navigate it. However, be aware that many sites will be confusing to move around with only the text displayed.

To disable multimedia content

  • From the Tools menu, select Internet Options…
  • Click the Advanced tab
  • In the Settings: box, scroll down to the Multimedia section

  • Deselect the content you want to turn off

Note: If the Show pictures check box is cleared, you can still view an individual picture on a web page by right-clicking its icon and then clicking Show Picture.

Configure Cache Usage

Browsing the web will quickly fill up your hard disk with a variety of files (graphics, sound, cookies and so on). If you have little space to spare you will want to keep a close watch on disk usage.

Internet Explorer provides allows you to control how much disk space can be taken up with temporary files and also enables you to delete them.

Note: If you revisit sites regularly, having the graphics files in your temporary folder will speed up the display of the site (this is called caching). If you delete cookies, sites that offer personalised content may not display correctly.

To manage your temporary internet files

  • From the Tools menu, select Internet Options…
  • Click the General tab
  • In the Temporary Internet files panel, click Delete Files… to restore disk space

The Delete Files dialogue box is displayed.
