If only it could be a perfect world where they could all agree and work the same. The pain of cross-browser compatibility drove me from being a hand-coder to Wordpress self-hosted. I love hand-coding websites and have been doing it, off-and-on, since anyone knew what a website was, but the problems with working with IE is enough to drive crazy. I'd rather have a little fun tweeking code on Wordpress than to deal with the headache of a full hand-coded site. Althought, HTML 5 is looking so interesting...tempting to go back. I dropped IE 6 support last year to save myself some gray hair. :P

I think progressive enhancement is the way to go as Andy Clarke talks about @ http://24ways.org/2009/ignorance-is-bliss.

I'm moving more and more into the progressive enhancement camp as it makes things much smoother.

Also getting clients to view the site in proper HTML rather than a Photoshop mockup is a good step as people aren't disappointed then when they see the design in IE with all it's various flaws.

Just my 2 pennies worth :)

Couldn't agree with you more - what's the point in having to compromise our site designs just so people who use an outdated browser can view them? If everybody dropped support for IE6 (or Internet Explorer in general :) ) web design would be lot simpler!! :)

I've just come to the point where I'll only support the most current version of Internet Explorer and only one version behind that- so right now I'll only check IE8 and IE7 to make sure my site works. Anything below 7 gets zero attention from me now- I figure if someone is using IE6, they're probably not the kind of person I want to work with anyway. Terrible, but oh well :P

. . ] URL article original: http://zavose.com/web-resources/cross-browser-compatibility-why-it-will-ruin-your-life [...]
